Intervention Plan

For my Summative Assessment Proposal I’m going to run a design briefing workshop for the Valuable 500 (The Valuable 500, 2025a) for DPS Diploma in Professional Studies students to design a poster and full marketing / activation campaign including social suggestions for the SYNC25 event in Tokyo. The event is the world’s first accountability summit on disability inclusion (The Valuable 500, 2025b).

“SYNC25 represents a pivotal moment in our mission to end disability exclusion and marks the start of a decade of accountability for our partners and companies. It will bring together Valuable 500 CEOs, C-suite leaders, next-generation leaders, and representatives from the global disability community to review progress, set agendas, and accelerate inclusion for the 1.3 billion people living with disabilities worldwide.” (The Valuable 500, 2025b)

In the briefing session I’ll share the document Nothing about us without us, which explains the use of ableist language and the importance of authentic storytelling (Sins Invalid, 2019). This is a great student glossary to refer to during their design phase of the workshop.

The learning video created by Saffron (The Valuable 500, 2025b) uses the concept of birds in a murmuration for ‘togetherness’. It is a great example for inspiration as to what the students could design for their campaign in a conceptual way.

I’ve designed a briefing PDF and will do the brief over Teams so anyone can attend, wherever they’re based in the world, to be as inclusive as possible. It will be recorded and transcribed for any students with an ISA or who need learning support, in case they miss the briefing or need to go over it again in their own time.

Some useful reference exhibitions they can visit for their research are THAT: Christine Sun Kim and Thomas Mader at the Wellcome Collection (Wellcome Collection, 2025a), which is also viewable in British Sign Language (BSL).

Being Human is another excellent resource for inclusive exhibition design (Wellcome Collection, 2025b), as is Zines: Forever DIY Publishing and Disability Justice (Wellcome Collection, 2025c).

I’m going to visit on Friday and document my visit to include in the briefing for anyone that can’t attend physically.

My proposal responds to diversity by aiming to share experiences of disability and disabled identity with the international community, and to end disability exclusion in the workplace by raising awareness at the V500 SYNC25 event (The Valuable 500, 2025b).

Have shared this with you via email already, but adding to the blog too for completeness!

Thank you Jo for sharing your proposed intervention, which involves a design briefing workshop marketing the Synch 25 accountability summit on disability inclusion. I appreciated how you’re thinking about inclusion not just in terms of the content, but also the design of the workshop.

In terms of your current plan: the concept of the Disability Dongle links to “Nothing about us without us” and might be relevant, so I encourage you to look at this. I also found myself thinking of the famous Meet the Superhumans Paralympics campaign, which was very successful and also received critique within the disabled community. Your intervention also reminded me of a chapter about advertising in Feminist Queer Crip (Kafer, 2013) which I’ll share with you (see attached).

The main bit of feedback I have at this stage relates to the importance of intersectionality. The LOs for the unit require you to consider “intersectional social justice”, which means focusing only on disability will restrict your ability to fully meet the assessment criteria. In particular, we encourage all participants to think about the relationship between awarding gaps for BAME/International students as part of their intervention. Let’s have a chat about how you might adapt your idea to bring this in.

Finally, please find some further questions/thoughts as provocations to support the development of your intervention plan:

Be prepared to articulate why you have chosen your intervention, and what the evidence base is for its importance. I recommend using dashboards.arts.ac.uk to look at relevant data for your course, such as awarding gaps, retention/continuation gaps, and NSS data.

When you get to your reflective report, you will need to articulate about your own positionality in relation to your intervention, so do keep this in mind throughout the intervention’s development. How does your positionality influence the choices you make, and what potential biases may you need to mitigate against?
I look forward to chatting later about your intervention plan and how the unit is going so far.
