Research Question and aims
“Can students explain or embed accessibility into their design work after completing the Live brief – A campaign based on the Design and Disability Exhibition at the V&A”
The aim of this project is to critically evaluate the effectiveness of a live brief, centred on the Design and Disability exhibition at the V&A, in supporting students’ understanding and application of accessibility within their design practice.
The project seeks to examine whether students are able not only to embed accessibility principles within their final campaign outcomes, but also to articulate their design decisions through reflective and evaluative language. It further aims to explore how an exhibition-led, socially engaged brief functions as a pedagogical tool in promoting inclusive design, professional awareness and critical engagement with social justice issues within art and design education.
I chose this topic because of personal industry experience that I think it’s really important for Students to embed into their work from the outset, rather than as an afterthought. This is extremely important in the DPS context, because they’ll bring it as a positive to the internships they go on during their year 3. The ‘live briefs’ are a ‘signature pedagogy’ of Art and Graphic Design courses (see Orr and Shreeve, knowledge, Values and Ambiguity in the Creative Curriculum).
